SARDAM, meaning «verbal slip» in Greek, is an annual, out of the box, interdisciplinary literature festival based in Cyprus (founded in 2013 – EFFE LABEL QUALIFICATION 2019-2020). The festival presents the work of writers, writers-performers and other artists from Cyprus and abroad, through hybrid and interdisciplinary acts/collaborations (e.g. text and sound/music, slam poetry, live reading and contemporary dance, videopoetry, interactive literary installations, sound poetry, visual poetry, site-specific readings/acts, literature and A.I. / VR, and so on). Besides presenting evenings full of alternative literary readings, screenings and interdisciplinary performances, the festival also presents exciting creative writing and performance workshops, writer’s/artist’s Residencies, as well as parallel events.
Μετά την περσινή επετειακή έκδοση για τα 10χρονα του φεστιβάλ στο θέατρο Ριάλτο στη Λεμεσό και στο Σ22 στην Αθήνα, το φετινό 11ο Σαρδάμ παίρνει μια ανάσα και επιστρέφει πιο εσωστρεφές, διατηρώντας τη δυναμική και ποικιλομορφία του. Για μια ακόμη χρονιά, συγγραφείς-περφόρμερ και άλλοι καλλιτέχνες από την Κύπρο και το εξωτερικό μοιράζονται πρωτότυπους τρόπους συγγραφής, ανάγνωσης και, γενικότερα, επιτέλεσης της λογοτεχνίας, μέσα από περφόρμανς, προβολές, εργαστήρια και παράλληλες δράσεις. Κοινό χαρακτηριστικό ο συνδυασμός της λογοτεχνίας και του λόγου με σύγχρονα και κλασικά μέσα έκφρασης, όπως θέατρο, τεχνολογία, ήχο / μουσική, σύγχρονο χορό, spoken word, εικαστικές τέχνες, βιντεοποίηση και ούτω καθεξής.
Για πρώτη φορά φέτος, η καθιερωμένη βραδιά ομαδικών περφόρμανς θα χωριστεί σε δύο ξεχωριστές βραδιές, με διαφορετικές συμμετοχές ανά ημέρα, στις 23 και 24 Σεπτεμβρίου στον πολυχώρο Συνεργείο στη Λεμεσό. Επιστρέφει, επίσης, και το πρόγραμμα φιλοξενίας του φεστιβάλ (SARDAM Residency) κατά τη διάρκεια του οποίου δύο καλλιτέχνες από το εξωτερικό θα χρησιμοποιήσουν τη Λεμεσό ως έμπνευση για τη δημιουργία μιας διαθεματικής λογοτεχνικής περφόρμανς.
Το 11ο ΣΑΡΔΑΜ, με έμφαση σε συμμετοχές από Κύπρο και Ελλάδα φέτος, θα παρουσιάσει και μια ενδιαφέρουσα συνεργασία με το διεθνές φεστιβάλ Βιντεοποίησης της Αθήνας, προβάλλοντας βραβευμένα βιντεοποιήματα από διάφορα μέρη του κόσμου, ενώ τιμώμενο πρόσωπο του φεστιβάλ (SARDAM Guest of Honour) θα είναι ο μουσικός και τραγουδοποιός Μιχάλης Σιγανίδης (Θεσσαλονίκη, 1958), εκφραστής της «αποδομητικής» τραγουδοποιίας και του μουσικού κολάζ στην Ελλάδα, με εκτενή μελέτη της ποίησης του Μίλτου Σαχτούρη. Εργαστήρια θα παρουσιάσουν η συγγραφέας Αμάντα Μιχαλοπούλου από Ελλάδα και η choreopoet (χορεύτρια-ποιήτρια) από Μπαρμπέιντος και Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο Safiya Kamaria Kinshasa.

After last year’s 10-year anniversary at Rialto Theatre in Limassol and at S22 in Athens, Sardam festival returns slightly more reserved but still rich and vibrant. Like every year, writers-performers and other artists from Cyprus and abroad will be sharing original experiences of writing, reading and performing, through a variety of acts, workshops, screenings and parallel events. Common ground will be the combination of literature/text and spoken word with traditional and modern means of expression like theatre, technology, sound / music, contemporary dance, poetry slam, visual arts, videopoetry, and so on.
For the first time this year, the Main Event of the festival will be divided into two separate nights which will showcase different acts each time, at Sinergio theatre on the 23rd and the 24th of September. SARDAM Residency programme will also return this year, during which two artists from abroad will be inspired by Limassol to create an interdisciplinary literary performance.
SARDAM’s 11th edition, with an emphasis on participants from Cyprus and Greece this year, will also present the international Video Poetry festival of Athens and will showcase awarded videopoems from different parts of the world. SARDAM’s Guest of Honour will be the musician and composer/songwriter Michalis Siganides (Thessaloniki, 1958), who follows a “deconstructive” approach to songwriting and represents the musical collage in Greece, with extensive research on the poetry of Miltos Sahtouris. Workshops will be delivered by the writer Amanda Michalopoulou from Greece and by the choreopoet from Barbados and the UK Safiya Kamaria Kinshasa.

Το φετινό ΣΑΡΔΑΜ γιορτάζει 10 χρόνια φεστιβαλικής παρουσίας και λογοτεχνικής περφόρμανς! Σε αυτή τη συναρπαστική επετειακή εκδοχή, επιστρέφουν στη σκηνή του φεστιβάλ σημαντικοί συμμετέχοντες προηγούμενων διοργανώσεων (Katalin Ladik – Yoko Ono Prize 2016, Tomomi Adachi – Prix Ars Electronica 2019 κ.ά.), αλλά και νέοι συμμετέχοντες (Narcisse – νικητής του Poetry Slam Γαλλίας 2013 και του Poetry Slam Κύπρου 2018, Αντώνης Βολανάκης – συμμετοχή στην Documenta14 to 2017 κ.ά.), ενώ για πρώτη φορά η ομαδική βραδιά του φεστιβάλ (Main Event) μεταφέρεται στο θέατρο Ριάλτο στη Λεμεσό, το Σάββατο 24 Σεπτεμβρίου! This year’s SARDAM festival celebrates 10 years of presence and literary performance! This fascinating celebratory edition of the festival hosts important guests from previous editions (Katalin Ladik – Yoko Ono Prize 2016, Tomomi Adachi – Prix Ars Electronica 2019, and others), as well as some new additions to the festival like Narcisse (Champion of the Poetry Slam of France in 2013 and the Poetry Slam of Cyprus in 2018), Adonis Volanakis (participation in Documenta14 in 2017) and others. Due to the festival’s 10-year anniversary, the Main Event of the festival will be showcased at Rialto theatre for the first time, on the 24th of September! Και φέτος, λόγω της πανδημίας Covid-19, το φεστιβάλ θα συνδυάσει βιντεοσκοπημένες και ζωντανές λογοτεχνικές περφόρμανς, ενώ τα εργαστήρια του φεστιβάλ θα πραγματοποιηθούν διά ζώσης και όχι διαδικτυακά όπως πέρσι, τηρώντας όλα τα μέτρα ασφάλειας και υγείας. Writers-performers and other artists from Cyprus and abroad will be sharing original experiences of writing, reading, as well as innovative presentations/performances of literature, through a variety of events and workshops. Common ground will be the combination of literature and spoken word with traditional and modern means of expression like theatre, technology, slamming, visual arts, sound poetry, and so on.
This year’s SARDAM, due to Covid-19, will combine live readings/performances with pre-recorded acts. The workshops of the festival will be live and not online like last year, following all necessary safety measures against Covid-19. A safe pass and a mask will be required.

a) a short bio (max 250 words, paragraph style)
b) a photo (in high resolution)
c) a sample of relevant work (poem, short story, novel excerpt, flash fiction, experimental text, visual writing, sound poem, word collage, video, artwork, music/sound piece etc.)
d) links/videos of previous performances/collaborations (optional)* we no longer accept descriptions of videopoems/videotexts but only the actual proposed videopoems/videotexts

*Please describe in detail how you plan to present your work and whether you will cooperate with another writer, artist or other professional. Some applicants may be offered a place for SARDAM 2022 edition.
Priority will be given to applicants who haven’t participated in the festival’s previous editions.
The applications will be evaluated by a selection committee which includes writers and artists from Cyprus and abroad.
The results will be announced in June 2021.

SARDAM, meaning «verbal slip» in Greek, is an annual, out of the box, interdisciplinary literature festival based in Cyprus (founded in 2013 – EFFE LABEL QUALIFICATION 2019-2020). The festival presents the work of writers, writers-performers and other artists from Cyprus and abroad, through hybrid and interdisciplinary acts/collaborations (eg. text and sound/music, slam poetry, live reading and contemporary dance, videopoetry, interactive literary installations, sound poetry, visual poetry, site-specific readings/acts, and so on). Besides presenting evenings full of alternative literary readings and interdisciplinary performances in different cities of Cyprus, the festival also presents exciting creative writing and performance workshops, a writer’s Residency, as well as parallel events.

MIXTAPE online platform is a collaboration between SARDAM interdisciplinary literature festival (founded in 2013) and the Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission in the UK, aiming at showcasing the work of Cypriot and international writers-performers. Revisiting Slam Poetry, which first appeared in the 1980s, or even the rhythm of words by the Beat Generation in the 1950s, MIXTAPE offers a taste of several trends related to contemporary literature and literary performance, including videos of spoken word (slamming), sound poetry, visual poetry, literature in relation to video art, literature in relation to sound/music, as well as conversations about writing and literary performance and an online creative writing workshop. In such uncertain, absurd times, MIXTAPE comes to remind us that we are all in this together, and no matter what happens, words will always be the way to bear, shake and change things.

Για μια ακόμη χρονιά, συγγραφείς-περφόρμερ και άλλοι καλλιτέχνες από την Κύπρο και το εξωτερικό μοιράζονται πρωτότυπους τρόπους συγγραφής, ανάγνωσης και, γενικότερα, παρουσίασης/επιτέλεσης της λογοτεχνίας και του λόγου, μέσα από ποικιλία από δρώμενα και εργαστήρια. Κοινό τους χαρακτηριστικό ο συνδυασμός της λογοτεχνίας και του λόγου με σύγχρονα και κλασικά μέσα έκφρασης, όπως θέατρο, τεχνολογία, ήχο / μουσική, slamming / spoken word, εικαστικές τέχνες, ηχητική ποίηση (sound poetry) κ.ά.
Φέτος το ΣΑΡΔΑΜ, λόγω της πανδημίαςCovid-19, συρρικνώνεται σε μέγεθος αλλά όχι σε δυναμική, προτείνοντας μια συμβολική επιστροφή στις ρίζες του φεστιβάλ, εκεί που όλα ξεκίνησαν, φέρνοντας σε επαφή παλαιότερους και νέους συμμετέχοντες.

Common ground will be the combination of literature and spoken word with traditional and modern means of expression like theatre, technology, slamming, visual arts, sound poetry and so on.
This year’s SARDAM, due to Covid-19, is smaller in size but not in impact, and suggests a symbolic return to the roots of the festival, where everything started, by connecting participants from previous editions with new participants.
